Johnny Cardoso: Scout Report

Callum Goodall –

A captivating narrative is unfolding within the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT). As they won the CONCACAF Nations League with a cagey 2-0 victory over Canada this week, the spotlight shone on a young and vibrant squad brimming with potential. The goals that sealed their triumph were crafted by a trio of prodigious talents – 20-year-old Gio Reyna provided the assists for both, the first of which was a header from 23-year-old Chris Richards, and the second a tidy finish from one of 2022-23’s breakout stars, 21-year-old Folarin Balogun.

Embracing their youthfulness, the USMNT fielded the youngest starting eleven in their history, with an average age of just 23 years and 214 days. Balogun, who only declared for the Stars and Stripes last month, looks set to be the talisman of the side, but among this cast of rising stars there is one player who has started to capture the imagination and stake his claim for a prominent role in the team’s future — 20-year-old midfielder Johnny Cardoso, affectionately known as “Johnny Soccer.”

While Cardoso earned his first cap in 2020, it is only recently that he has begun to make a real claim for a place in the squad, with three of his seven first-team appearances coming this year, including a solid performance off the bench in the Nations League Final.

But what sets Johnny apart from his peers and sparks optimism for his blossoming career? Leadership, versatility, tight ball control, attacking prowess, and defensive solidity – the list goes on. This article will delve into the finer details of his talent, as we witness a young dynamo who will be hoping to leave his mark on the USMNT and shine on the grandest stage of all — the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
